What is Broadband?

Broadband may be classified as communication networks that are capable of transmitting high capacity data packages.

What is the difference between wired and wireless Broadband?

Wired or fixed Broadband is a service that is provided to a fixed place that requires wired connections to receive the service (the internet). Wireless Broadband, however, is a wireless service that enables you to reach the internet from anywhere, be it at home or while travelling.

What are fibre optics?

Fibres made from pure glass that are long and thin, and they are used in transmitting optical signals to very long distances and at very high speeds.

What are the advantages of fibre optics networks compared to the copper cables network (DSL)?

Fibre Optics are distinct from wire cables owing to the following characteristics:

Speed:

Optical fibres can be used to transmit data at much higher speeds than is possible with copper lines. This allows files and videos etc. to be download in seconds rather than minutes

Cost:

Miles of fibre optics can be produced at a lower cost than metal cables such as copper wires.

Thinness:

Fibre optics are very thin and accurate in comparison with metal cables. Moreover, as these fibres are very narrow, and many of them can be combined in packages to be laid in cables of very low thickness, which cannot be accomplished using copper wires.

Efficiency:

Very few signals are lost or weakened while transmission using fibre optics compared to metal cables.

Information Transmission:

Information is transmitted as optical signals through fibre optics as opposed to electrical signals via copper wires. These optical signals that pass through one fibre optic do not intervene with other signals that are passing through other fibre optics in the same package inside the same cable this means that lines do not overlap during telephone conversations where the sound stays clear.

Digital Signal Transmission:

Fibre optics are best suited for the transmission of digital signals, which are used by computer networks.

Fire Safety:

Optical fibres carry optical signals along the glass rather than carrying electricity along copper wires. This makes them an almost zero fire risk.

Lightweight:

Fibre Optics are lighter than copper wires, and also take a small area when laid underground in comparison to the large spaces occupied by metal cables.
